Here is some footage of the Multiplayer portion of Homefront, even with the games issues we did get some hands on time with it. And we do have to say we did enjoy our time with it, but lets hope the game gets patched soon!

Geurilla Games returns with the third part of their flagship military shooter series, with a tweaked graphics engine and refined multiplayer it re-affirms it’s position as PS3’s premier FPS.

MY FELLOW HELGHANS….

Killzone 3 takes place mere seconds after the end of the Killzone 2, as Sev and Rico face the repercussions of Scolar Visari’s murder. It’s not long before the white hat ISA are blasting their way through the ruins of Pyrhus (bombed by Visari in the games pre-title sequence) en route to another prolongued Helghast offensive.
It’s pertinent to explain from the outset that the story is the weakest part Killzone 3, What began on PS2 as an interesting sci-fi epic with an engaging antagonist has, over the course of two sequels, degraded into the tale of idiotic grunts disobeying orders (which for these guys is as easy as breathing) and brutally culling their enemies with zeal.
The Helghast are still the best part though, with their gruff British accents, stormtrooper-chic apparel and crafty AI, theyre a great opponent. Also, the frequent cutscenes would be unbearably tedious if it weren’t for the panto villainy of the Helghan elite, scheming against the ISA and each other.
An excellent voicecast is bolstered by the star wattage of Ray Winstone and Malcolm Mcdowell as members of the Helghan hierarchy, they make an appropriate replacement for the Brian Cox’s Visari.

KILL THOSE FASCIST PIGS

So, with story out the window it’s left up to Geurilla’s excellent shooter mechanics to save the day and actually make this game worth buying. Killzone relies heavily on spectacle and linear locomotion to usher the player through proceedings, but the pace is so breakneck and the combat so satisfying that one never questions the fact the campaign consists of getting form A to D by shooting B or blowing up C.
As mentioned before, the Helghast are formidable opponents who will split up, take cover, flank and generally use some sneaky tactics to make you and your ISA buddies dead. Luckily, some minor tweaks have been made to the already solid cover and aiming system so you can give the ‘Hegs’ what for. No considerable changes have been made to the combat, except some brief vehicle based sections (and one on a nifty jet pack) and the implementation of a ‘brutal melee’ system, which introduces a fun and grisly way to dispatch foes, hitting an enemy once dazes them long enough for you to perform a bloody execution (poking eyes out, slitting throats etc.)

BEAUTIFUL CARNAGE

One thing that this franchise excels at is jaw-dropping visuals and that is never more evident than in Killzone 3, which keeps the wonderfully detailed destruction of the urban battlefield and adds glowing, ethereal forests and snowy mountains to its palette as well. Elsewhere, there is the usual boatload of awe-inspiring set pieces, including a fight against a skyscraper sized Helghast walker and a small section that takes place in zero gravity.

POKING FRIENDS EYES OUT IS FUN

With the prominent existence of both the Call Of Duty and Battlefield franchises, it’s hard for any shooter to makes it mark in the online arena, but Killzone 3 is more than capable of holding it’s own.
Killzone 2 had an enjoyably but somewhat flawed multiplayer that was plagued with balance issues and exploits, all of which have now been ironed out. Opponents are now not as frustratingly hard to kill thanks to reduced health and the squad revive system is now more reliable (and customisable thanks to the generously open ended unlock system).
Perhaps it could benefit from some extra modes rather than bundling all the usual team and objective based games into three poorly explained sections, but with a varied class system that exploits many of the niche online gaming trends (jetpacks, stealth, disguise etc) and some great maps, online play is an often enjoyable, rarely frustrating experience. Also, with all signs pointing to Geurilla pumping out their usual regular helpings of extra maps, this could be a lasting online diversion.

WON THE BATTLE BUT NOT THE WAR

Unfortunately, as impressive as the visuals of Killzone 3 are, as solid as the combat is and as refined as the multiplayer has become, this third installment, like its predecessor is replete with some glaring flaws.
Aside from the overall linearity of the single player and the godawful machismo of the story, there are some lazy design flaws that let some of the best parts of the game down.
Take the stealth section in the Helghan forest as a prime example, in which the sheer beauty of the setting is offset by the stupidity of the gameplay, which has Sev sneak past scores of enemy troops, concealed by strategically place shrubbery that doesn’t look like it could hide an insect, let alone a burly ISA death dealer. Elsewhere there are visual and sound glitches that serve to hamper the atmosphere of the campaign and, worst of all, seargent Rico Rodriguez, surely a contender for most annoying videogame character ever.
These flaws aren't enough to make Killzone 3 not worth experiencing, its blockbuster thrills and stunning good looks help it to endure through its shortcomings, but Guerilla need to do some serious retooling if the inevitable Killzone 4 is to be a success.
